BMT Defence Services is now Europe's leading independent centre of excellence in designing new surface warships, and managing design change through life for existing platforms.  We have undertaken contracts in the UK, Australia, Canada, Chile, France and New Zealand since the company was formed in 1988.

Past and present projects include:

  • Platform design, engineering, simulation and other extensive support for the UK's Queen Elizabeth Class CarriersThe new Type 45 Destroyer.
  • Design change management and design support for in-service warships, for example, removal of the Sea Dart missile system from the CVS aircraft carriers to increase the area of the flight deck.
  • Caimen-200 - A design for a Fast Landing Craft capable of transporting 200 tonnes at 16+ knots.
  • Concept design, systems engineering and other support on the Royal Navy's Type 42 destroyer replacement programmes: Future Frigate; Common New Generation Frigate (CNGF) and Project Horizon.
  • Design support to the project team for the ultimate Type 42 replacement programme, the Daring class Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyer.
  • Concept design for a future fast flexible frigate (F5, in collaboration with our sister company, BMT Nigel Gee, designer of the experimental fast littoral warfare vessel USS Sea Fighter/X-Craft).
  • We are also an integral member of the UK's Naval Design Partnership - the rainbow team of MOD and Industry set up to design the next generation of the UK's warships.
