Navies that operate submarines know they are the most complex machines built by mankind. They must sustain the lives of their crew and deliver their capability for months on end in an extreme environment. Their consequent complexity demands a comprehensive shore-based support infrastructure and constant attention to design detail. 
BMT Defence Services is one of very few companies in Europe with the expertise and the track record to design a submarine platform and to deliver design change management for in-service boats.
It is the only European design house that is completely independent of ship-builders and prime contractors.
The company is a long established member of the industrial partnership that helps the UK Ministry of Defence keep the Royal Navy's Swiftsure, Trafalgar and Vanguard class submarines operating safely and capably at sea.
Our naval architects and engineers produced the winning platform design for the Batch 2 Trafalgar class and have provided design support for the new Astute class submarines.
We have conceived new platform designs, such as the innovative C4500 and the Ship Submersible Gas Turbine (SSGT), to inform technology decisions. These insights have helped identify the best technologies to develop to reduce the risks associated 
with delivering enhanced capability from future platforms.
Our marine engineers have advised on the options open for the next generation of submarine propulsion secondary systems representing the propulsion and power machinery downstream of the nuclear reactor.
